American Farmers Experience A Surge In Exports Of Sweet Potatoes To European Nations

A common item in the southern meals, and a common favorite in Thanksgiving feast, the sweet potato is getting a lot more common in European countries, especially Great Britain.

US growers have found a increasing market for the vitamin loaded, low cholesterol, sweet potato from European people. Between 2005 and 2009, the US exports of sweet potatoes has risen to over $51.4 million.

This is a large switch from 10 years ago, where Europeans thought of the sweet potato as an exotic food. Why the hasty explosion is unknown, but probably due to the advertising work of the US growers to notify Europeans of the wonderful flavor and nutritional value of sweet potatoes.

European food regulations are more strict than American standards, but the US growers are not frightened to abide by those guidelines. The farmers are also buying new equipment to help grow a more consistent size and shape of sweet potato, which is very important to Europeans.

All the marketing and upgraded equipment help, but the veggie sells itself.
